Performance Breakdown
The Full Story
First Impressions
The Bear Elite Hybrid makes a strong first impression. At 14 inches and roughly 110 lbs for a queen, this is a substantial mattress. The phase-change material cover feels cool to the touch right out of the box, and the overall construction feels premium — tight seams, quality fabrics, and none of the cheap foam smell that plagues budget competitors. Bear positions this as a performance and recovery mattress, and the Celliant-infused cover (clinically shown to promote blood flow through infrared energy conversion) sets it apart from every other cooling mattress we've tested.
Sleeping on It
We tested the Medium Firm (Luxury Firm) across four weeks, which Bear recommends for most sleepers. The cooling is impressive — the phase-change cover absorbs heat noticeably for the first few hours, and the copper-infused memory foam underneath continues to wick heat throughout the night. It doesn't match the GlacioTex-level cooling of the Helix Midnight Luxe, but it's clearly better than standard cooling gels. We'd rate it a solid 8.5/10 for cooling, placing it in the upper tier of passive systems.
The real differentiator is how you feel in the morning. Whether it's the Celliant cover, the support system, or placebo, we consistently felt more refreshed waking up on the Bear than on comparably priced hybrids. Muscle soreness after workouts seemed to dissipate faster. I'm not going to claim a mattress cover heals your body — but the clinical studies on Celliant are real, and the subjective experience matched them.
Support-wise, the zoned pocketed coils with high-gauge centers provide excellent lumbar support. Side sleeping is comfortable, back sleeping is well-supported, and the Firm option (Extra Firm) is actually firm enough for stomach sleepers — something many competitors fail at.
What We Loved
Three genuine firmness options is a game-changer. Most "three firmness" mattresses have a Soft, Medium, and "Medium-that-calls-itself-Firm." Bear's Extra Firm is genuinely firm (rated 7-8/10), which means stomach sleepers and heavier individuals actually have a viable option. The lifetime warranty and 120-night trial provide solid buyer protection. And Bear runs sales almost constantly — we'd never recommend paying the $2,305 MSRP when you can regularly find it at $1,383 or less.
What Frustrated Us
At full MSRP ($2,305), the Bear Elite is overpriced for what you get. The cooling is good but not best-in-class, and the Celliant technology — while clinically supported — is hard to isolate from the overall comfort of a good mattress. The memory foam layers also make it slow to respond, which combination sleepers will notice as they shift positions.
The mattress is heavy and the box is unwieldy — have a helper ready for setup. We also noticed the phase-change cover's cooling effect diminishes after the first wash, though Bear says this normalizes after a few uses. Follow their care instructions carefully.
The Verdict
The Bear Elite Hybrid is the best cooling mattress for active people and athletes. The combination of phase-change cooling, copper-infused foam, and Celliant recovery technology is unique in the market. Three genuine firmness options mean it works for every sleep position — something most competitors can't claim. Buy it on sale (never pay MSRP) and you're getting a top-tier cooling hybrid with genuine recovery benefits. It won't out-cool a Helix Midnight Luxe, but the morning-after feeling is unmatched.
