Contour5
Phase-change cooling meets a 365-night trial
The Contour5 wins on customer confidence: a 365-night trial and lifetime warranty are unmatched. The phase-change cooling is adequate but won't blow you away compared to Purple's Grid or Tempur-Pedic's LuxeBreeze. Where it really shines is value — you get genuine cooling technology, free white-glove delivery, and the longest trial period in the industry. Low-risk entry into cooling mattresses.

The Full Story
First Impressions
Saatva's white-glove delivery is a genuine differentiator. Two delivery people carried the Contour5 into our bedroom, placed it on the frame, and offered to remove our old mattress — all included in the price. No box to wrestle with, no waiting for expansion, no off-gassing period with the windows open. The mattress was ready to sleep on within minutes of delivery. For a product category dominated by compressed-in-a-box shipping, this felt notably more premium.
The Contour5 itself has a clean, understated look — no flashy branding or gimmicky quilting patterns. It looks like a well-made mattress, which sounds obvious but isn't always the case with "cooling" beds that try too hard to signal their technology.
Sleeping on It
The 5-pound density memory foam is the first thing you notice. This is a denser, more substantial foam than what you'd find in most online mattresses (which typically use 3-4 pound foam). The conforming is deeper and more precise — you sink in meaningfully and feel genuinely held in place. Side sleepers will feel the difference immediately at the shoulders and hips, where the dense foam eliminates pressure points with an effectiveness that lighter foams can't match.
The cooling tells a mixed story. The phase-change material infused into the lumbar layer does provide an initial cool-to-the-touch sensation, and for the first couple of hours, the mattress feels noticeably cooler than a standard memory foam bed. But over a full eight-hour night, especially for sleepers who run hot, the all-foam construction does retain some warmth. It's better than a standard memory foam mattress by a meaningful margin, but it doesn't stay as cool as hybrid designs (which use coils for airflow) or the Purple Grid. In an air-conditioned bedroom, it performed well. On a warm night, we noticed the familiar memory foam warmth creeping in by the early morning hours.
What We Loved
The 365-night trial is extraordinary. A full year to decide if a mattress works for you — that's three times longer than most competitors. Combined with the lifetime warranty, Saatva is essentially saying "we're so confident, take your time." That level of buyer protection genuinely reduces purchasing anxiety, especially at this price point. Motion isolation is also excellent — we'd rank it among the top two or three mattresses we've tested for minimising partner disturbance.
What Frustrated Us
There's a $99 return processing fee if you decide to send it back during the trial. It's modest relative to the purchase price, but it does add a small barrier to returns that fully free-return competitors don't have. The all-foam construction also means minimal bounce — repositioning requires a deliberate effort as the foam slowly releases you. Stomach sleepers and active sleepers who change positions frequently may find this restrictive.
We also wish the cooling were more sustained. The phase-change technology works well initially, but it has a finite capacity to absorb heat before it saturates. It's genuinely better than standard foam, but "cooling mattress" sets an expectation that the Contour5 doesn't fully deliver on for all-night performance.
The Verdict
The Saatva Contour5 is the mattress for cautious buyers. If you want genuine memory foam comfort with improved (not transformative) cooling, backed by the industry's longest trial period and a lifetime warranty, it's hard to argue with the value proposition. At $1,695 for a queen, it undercuts both Purple and Tempur-Pedic significantly while delivering comparable pressure relief. The cooling won't win any head-to-head contests against hybrids or active systems, but for most sleepers in climate-controlled bedrooms, it's sufficient. If you're not sure what you want and you like the safety net of a year-long return window, start here.
